As a future art educator I have the unique opportunity to expand young peoples knowledge about how and why we create art. I want to teach my students that art is a learning experience that goes beyond producing a product. Creating art is a process by which students are engaging in high level thinking and developing skills that translate across the curriculum. When we create art we are using critical thinking and problem solving skills to visually communicate a message or an idea. By practicing these synthesis skills through strong tactile and visual experiences, students are engaging with a process that is applicable to multiple modes of learning. With this philosophy in mind, my goal is to teach my students the necessary tools to create meaningful art by using their personal experiences and critical thinking skills. By individualizing my instruction in this way I hope to create an environment that is inclusive and valuable to every one of my students.

In my classroom students will engage with art through a variety of methods including demonstrations, artists talks, projects, critique sessions, and self- reflections. Through these methods students will learn to use the principles and elements of art as tools for communicating self-expression and growth as a student and an individual. The primary form of assessment in my classroom will be evaluated by student performance during discussions, critiques and self-reflections. We will also be closely examining art throughout history and how we view art in our present society. I believe by teaching art we should seek to expand our knowledge about why we create art personally as well as globally. Through our studies in art history we will examine art from various cultural backgrounds and seek to understand more about art and it’s relation to the human experience.

Ultimately, I hope for my students to engage with art on multiple levels that challenge them to expand their views about art and how they approach problems. As a future educator my goal is to teach my students the skills necessary for them to move on and be successful. I believe these skills include having a growth mindset where self-reflection, creative thinking and critical thinking are primary in accomplishing goals and solving problems. As a professional I strive to practice what I teach in my everyday life and hope that in doing so I will inspire my students to achieve their best in all facets of their lives.
